Municipality refreshes road markings in Allen Street

The new road markings aim to improve safety, visibility and traffic flow along one of Newcastle's busiest routes.

Newcastle Municipality started re-marking one of the town’s busiest roads, Allen Street, last week.

According to the municipality’s communications department, the project formed part of its ongoing road infrastructure maintenance programme aimed at improving road safety, enhancing traffic flow and creating a safer, more accessible environment for motorists, pedestrians, businesses and visitors.

Busy corridor receives safety upgrade

In a statement posted on Facebook, the department said Allen Street is a vital economic corridor that carries high volumes of daily traffic and provides access to commercial businesses, public facilities and investment hubs within the CBD.

“The road marking project is therefore a strategic investment in both public safety and urban mobility,” the statement read.

Municipal teams are repainting stop lines, directional arrows, pedestrian crossings, lane dividers and other essential traffic control markings.

“High-quality reflective road marking paint is being used to improve visibility during both daytime and night-time conditions, helping to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of traffic incidents.”

Project follows community concerns

The municipality said the project follows concerns raised by motorists, businesses and stakeholders during public participation and stakeholder engagement processes regarding the visibility of road markings within the CBD.

According to the municipality, the intervention forms part of its broader commitment to maintaining infrastructure, promoting road safety and ensuring that public spaces remain functional, safe and supportive of economic activity.

“Work is being carried out in phases to minimise disruption to traffic flow and business operations. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling through affected areas; comply with temporary traffic management measures; and remain alert around municipal work teams,” the statement added.

The municipality concluded by saying it remains committed to investing in the maintenance and improvement of road infrastructure to enhance service delivery, improve accessibility, and support sustainable economic development throughout Newcastle.
