Throwback Thursday reveals how little has changed in Endumeni
A look back at headlines from a decade ago reveals challenges that still resonate today.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
A glance back at the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Courier from 20 years ago reveals a striking similarity between the issues making headlines then and those that continue to dominate conversations today.
One of the biggest events on the local calendar was the popular Biltongfees (who remembers that?), which attracted large crowds and offered a wide variety of food, entertainment and family-friendly activities.
Back in 2006, the Fees was held at Talana Museum, where visitors gathered to enjoy a day filled with fun and community spirit. From there, it moved to Battlefields Country Lodge and after that, changed hands, evaporated.
Local government also found itself in the spotlight. Front-page headlines reported the arrest of two municipal officials on fraud charges after they were allegedly involved in the illegal sale of municipal plots.
Healthcare concerns were another major talking point. Dundee Hospital came under criticism from patients who complained about poor service and alleged rude treatment (sounds familiar? 0from nursing staff while seeking medical assistance.
Crime and political controversy dominated the news
Crime continued to be a serious concern throughout the area, with reports of murders, thefts, muggings and armed gangs frequently making headlines.
Meanwhile, political controversy unfolded in Dannhauser, where opposition parties challenged the appointment of a new municipal manager.
At the time, critics claimed the appointment was irregular and questioned the qualifications of the successful candidate, arguing that his background as a male nurse did not adequately prepare him for the position.
Looking back a decade later, the stories serve as a reminder that while people, places and circumstances may change, many of the challenges facing local communities remain remarkably familiar.
