Dannhauser residents march against social ills

Residents marched through Dannhauser to raise awareness of violence, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.

Residents took to the streets of Dannhauser on Monday’s school holiday to raise awareness of gender-based violence, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.

The march drew community members of all ages, many carrying placards bearing messages aimed at highlighting the devastating impact these social challenges have on families and communities.

Participants walked through parts of the town calling for greater community involvement, stronger support systems for victims of abuse and more opportunities for young people to make positive life choices.

Vanessa Sibiya of the Department of Community Safety and Liaison said the initiative was aimed at encouraging residents to work together to address issues affecting society.

Fostering safer and healthier communities

She said the South African Police Service supported such awareness campaigns as they helped foster safer and healthier communities.

“These are issues that affect everyone. By working together, we can create awareness, educate young people and build stronger communities,” she said.

The march was also supported by Farzanah Dookie and her team from Dannhauser Helping Hands, who have been involved in several community upliftment initiatives in the area.

Organisers said gender-based violence, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy continue to have a significant impact on many communities, often contributing to poverty, crime and disrupted family structures.

The event formed part of ongoing efforts to educate residents and encourage open discussions around social challenges facing young people.

South Africa’s annual Drug Awareness Week (June 22 to June 27) , which promotes education on the dangers of substance abuse and encourages prevention programmes, will be observed later this month.

Organisers thanked all participants for supporting the initiative and urged residents to continue working together to create a safer and more supportive environment for future generations.
