Ward 20 councillor calls for tree felling to combat crime
The clean-up is expected to make the area safer, so criminals can't hide in the bushes.
Ward 20 Councillor Abbas Warasally asked the municipality to cut down trees and clear bush in Azalea Drive after a suspected thief escaped through the area early yesterday morning (June 16).
Attempted break-in
Warasally said the incident happened at about 03:00 when a man was believed to be trying to break into a house in Protea Drive.
The councillor, together with local community patrollers, responded and tried to catch the man.
Thick bush serves as hideaway
Warasally said the thick bush gives criminals a place to hide and makes it harder for patrollers and residents to spot suspicious activity. Because of this, he requested that the municipality clear the area to improve visibility and safety.
Municipal workers have already begun cutting down trees and clearing bushes, and are continuing today (June 17).
Stay alert
Warasally also urges residents to stay alert, as crime in the area appears to be increasing. He said people should not ignore their dogs when they bark, especially during the early hours of the morning. “Your dogs can alert you that something is happening outside. Residents need to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity,” he said.
The tree felling and bush clearing is expected to make the area safer, and help prevent criminals from using the vegetation as a hiding place.
