IEC encourages youth participation ahead of elections
Young people were urged to use the upcoming weekend to verify their voter registration status.
Representatives from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) were at the Town Hall in Ladysmith today (June 18) for an Uthukela District Youth Sector Event. The event aimed to encourage young people to register to vote and actively participate in the democratic process.
Youth is a vital sector
uThukela regional manager of the IEC, Mpumelelo Sithebe, said the commission chose to engage with young people because they are a vital sector of society, especially as the country prepares for future elections. She emphasised that young people are the leaders of tomorrow and noted that June is widely recognised as Youth Month in South Africa.
Important information on voter registration and opportunities
Sithebe explained that the event provided the IEC with an opportunity to educate young people about important electoral dates (including voter registration weekends), voter verification processes and election-related requirements. The commission also shared information regarding employment opportunities and recruitment processes linked to electoral activities.
The event brought together youth from various sectors, including political organisations, religious groups, non-governmental organisations, community structures and the broader public. Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were also in attendance.
“As the elections approach, we want to encourage young people to participate and understand that they also have the opportunity to establish their own political organisations if they wish,” said Sithebe. “It is important for them to know key election processes, such as voter registration requirements and what is needed when casting a vote.”
Call for greater community involvement
Sithebe further encouraged young people to become actively involved in community meetings and public engagements so they can stay informed about developments affecting their communities. He urged them to visit the IEC website regularly to access information on electoral matters and employment opportunities.
In addition, she called on young people to use the upcoming voter registration weekend (June 20-21) to verify their voter registration status with the IEC and ensure that their details are correctly captured on the voters’ roll ahead of future elections.
