Five businesses shut down in compliance crackdown
A compliance operation led by Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Zama Sibisi and Ward 20 Councillor Abbas Warasally resulted in the closure of five businesses yesterday (June 22).

Expired goods found at AK’s Hypermarket
Health inspectors discovered several expired food items at AK’s Hypermarket. Officials also raised concerns about the store’s overall condition, leading to its immediate closure.
Seven-day compliance notice issued
The store was given seven days to provide the required documentation and address outstanding compliance issues before it can re-open. However, today (June 23), AK’s Hypermarket was once again open and trading normally.

Businesses targeted
Inspection teams visited several businesses, including Countdown, Ship & Anchor and Decadence. They then proceeded to the old CFCC area, before ending at Alambra.
Crackdown to continue
The operation focused on illegal employment, undocumented foreign nationals, expired goods, and health and safety violations. Municipal officials say similar inspections will continue across Ladysmith to enforce compliance with health, labour and public safety regulations.
