Youth Day football tournament unites communities in Vryheid

Vryheid PSG claimed glory as Youth Day football united Bhekuzulu communities. Meta Description

Cheers and celebrations were heard across Bhekuzulu as football lovers gathered to commemorate Youth Day through sport at the AbaQulusi FM Soccer Spectacular.

Held at the Bhekuzulu sports grounds in New Location, the tournament brought together four local teams – AbaQulusi FC, Vryheid Liverpool FC, Vryheid PSG FC and Lime City FC – for a day of entertaining football and community spirit. The teams battled it out for prizes, pride and bragging rights on the day.

Honouring the youth through sport

AbaQulusi Community Radio station manager Busi Thusini said the event was organised to honour the youth of 1976 and to create a positive platform for young people during Youth Month.

“This is the first annual Soccer Spectacular organised by the station. As we celebrate Youth Month, we wanted to take young people away from the streets, where they are exposed to crime and substance abuse, and encourage them to participate in something productive. We also want to nurture talent and skills among our youth. The young people of today should learn from the youth of 1976 and understand the importance of education and empowerment.”

Vryheid PSG emerge victorious

The tournament saw an exciting final between Vryheid PSG and Lime City FC. After a series of hard-fought matches, Vryheid PSG were crowned champions.

Vryheid PSG coach Masandi Mashazi applauded his players for their determination and teamwork throughout the tournament.

“We played beautiful football, but the matches were not easy at all. They required a lot of stamina and tactical thinking to overcome our rivals. As a team, we had to remain united and push ourselves to the limit. I would like to congratulate the players who scored the winning goals: Lungisani Thwala and Anele Jiyane.”

He also thanked AbaQulusi FM for recognising local football talent and providing clubs with an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Community support praised

The station manager extended her gratitude to all participating teams and supporters, as well as Zululand District Municipality, AbaQulusi Local Municipality, Mr Thwala and Vryheid Plaza for their support in making the initiative a success.
