Throwback Thursday: Crime and World Cup fever dominate Courier headlines

Crime concerns and World Cup excitement captured Dundee's attention in June 2006.

Serious concerns were raised in Dundee 20 years ago when reports revealed that children as young as nine were allegedly involved in criminal activities in the area.

The youngsters, often acting under the supervision of adults, were linked to a range of offences including housebreaking, drug-related crimes and sexual offences. The shocking statistics sparked widespread concern among residents and law enforcement authorities.

At the same time, excitement was building ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which kicked off that week in Germany. Staff at Charlie’s Spar confidently predicted a final between Germany and Brazil, although the tournament ultimately produced a different outcome. Italy won that World Cup, defeating France 5–3 on penalties in the final after the match ended in a 1–1 draw

Home Affairs had issues back then

Residents also received encouraging news regarding Home Affairs services. Officials, who were operating from a mobile office at the time, were informed that the department was set to be upgraded to district office status. Regional representatives confirmed that suitable office space was being sought for the move.

Meanwhile, vehicle theft remained a major concern, with cars continuing to be stolen from both the central business district and residential neighbourhoods.

On the sports field, Sarel Cilliers High School once again dominated Derby Day. The Blue Lions secured a convincing 33-7 victory in the main rugby match, continuing their strong record against their rivals.
