Police seize two illegal firearms on R33 route

Two men were arrested after police allegedly found unlicensed firearms during roadside operations on the R33.

Two men, aged 31 and 59, were arrested on the R33 between Dundee and Greytown on the evening of June 27 after police allegedly found them in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana, said the arrests were made by the Msinga Visible Policing unit during routine stop-and-search operations aimed at preventing and combating crime in the district.

“Two vehicles were stopped on separate occasions. During searches, officers allegedly found an unlicensed pistol and ammunition in each vehicle.”

The firearms were confiscated and will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of other crimes.

The suspects have been charged with the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Msinga Magistrate’s Court soon.
