Residents call for leadership to fix Endumeni
Residents say stronger leadership and accountability will help restore Endumeni's future.
Residents believe turning Endumeni around will require far more than a change in political leadership.
That was the clear message from readers who responded to the Courier’s question: “What will it take to fix Endumeni?”
While opinions varied on the solutions, many agreed that competent leadership, financial discipline, accountability and improved service delivery are essential if the municipality is to recover from years of decline.
From deteriorating roads and ageing infrastructure to governance failures, mounting debt and poor by-law enforcement, residents described a town in urgent need of decisive action.
Leadership tops the list
Many readers said appointments should be based on qualifications, experience and integrity rather than political affiliation.
Bhavna Morar said the municipality needed “competent, honest, qualified and dedicated individuals, irrespective of race or political party”, while Flora Conradie called for managers “who want to work, not just receive a salary”.
Vele Uthi Bhuti echoed the sentiment, saying experienced managers, engineers, technicians and accountants should be appointed on merit.
Xolani Buthelezi said independent organisations should oversee recruitment to ensure qualified local candidates receive a fair opportunity.
Residents want action
Others focused on the municipality’s financial challenges and declining service delivery.
Mthokozisi Simphiwe Duze said Endumeni must address its debt, unfunded budget and electricity losses while strengthening revenue collection and financial controls.
He added that the municipality also needed leaders who understood the community and were committed to restoring public trust through improved governance and basic services.
Kobus van der Bank suggested business leaders should manage the municipality, while Joeleen Anderson said she had witnessed the town’s decline over the past 20 years and believed a change in leadership was needed.
Michael Kührau called for urgent repairs to potholes and cleaner streets, saying these improvements would make a noticeable difference.
Despite differing views, the overwhelming message was that residents want accountable leadership, sound financial management and visible improvements to restore confidence in Endumeni.
