DA calls for action against illegal dumping

The DA urges the municipality and residents to work together.

Local members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Newcastle have expressed deep concerns over the ever-growing problem of illegal dumping across the greater Newcastle area.

“What was once an occasional occurrence has become a widespread issue, with illegal dumping sites appearing in residential areas, open spaces, road reserves and near streams,” said DA Branch Ward 3 Newcastle vice-chairperson Rajendra Jaggernath.

According to Jaggernath, illegal dumping not only creates an unpleasant environment but also poses serious health and safety risks.

“It attracts vermin, encourages the spread of disease, blocks storm-water drainage systems, contributes to flooding during heavy rains, and degrades the natural environment.”

A call for stronger enforcement

According to Jaggernath, residents deserve to live in clean and safe neighbourhoods, but the current state of many areas is unacceptable.

“While every resident has a responsibility to dispose of waste responsibly, the municipality must also fulfil its obligation by ensuring regular refuse collection, maintaining clean public spaces, removing illegally dumped waste promptly, and enforcing municipal by-laws against offenders,” he said.

The DA has called on Newcastle Municipality to increase enforcement against illegal dumping through regular inspections and fines, identify and monitor known dumping hot-spots, remove illegally dumped waste without unnecessary delays, conduct public awareness campaigns on responsible waste disposal, and work with communities to promote clean-up initiatives and environmental stewardship.

Residents urged to play their part

“We also appeal to all residents to play their part by disposing of waste responsibly and reporting incidents of illegal dumping. Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility; and together, we can restore pride in our communities.”

Jaggernath believes a clean Newcastle is achievable but requires commitment from both the municipality and residents.

“A clean Newcastle is possible, but it requires commitment from both the municipality and every resident,” he concluded.
