Vryheid residents will have no shortage of activities to choose from on Saturday, with a major rugby final, a new road running event and a popular community basaar all taking place.

Fortress Vryheid Run makes KZN debut

Athletes will be up early for the Fortress Vryheid Run, which makes the Fortress Running Series’ KwaZulu-Natal debut at AbaQulusi Plaza. The event features 21km, 10km and 5km races and aims to identify and develop road running talent from the Zululand District and surrounding rural communities.

Founded by former Comrades Marathon runner Israel Morake, the series was created to provide opportunities for talented athletes who often miss out on exposure because most major road races are held in larger cities.

The event is organised by the ISMO Athletic Club in partnership with Inkamana Athletics Club, with Olympic 800m silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng forming part of the organising team.

League final takes centre stage

Rugby fans can head to the Vryheid Rugby Club, where the home side takes on Volksrust Rugby Club in the league finals. The second-team match kicks off at 14:00, followed by the first-team final at 15.30. Entry is R10 per person and R10 per vehicle, with food and refreshments available throughout the afternoon.

Support the SAVF basaar

Earlier in the day, the SAVF Jubileum will host its annual basaar from 09:00 at 82 Afrikaner Street. Visitors can browse a variety of stalls while enjoying homemade treats, including boerewors rolls, vetkoek, pancakes, potjiekos, curry and rice, as well as refreshments in the tea garden. Plants, arts and crafts and entertainment for children will also be available.

The SAVF invites the community to support the fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards its continued care of elderly residents.
