An approaching cut-off low pressure system is expected to bring heavy snow, freezing temperatures and possible flooding to parts of the province, including Ladysmith. As a result, KwaZulu-Natal authorities have activated emergency response plans.

Roads to be cleared before snow builds up

KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said road graders and Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) teams will clear snow before it accumulates beyond 30cm on major routes.

RTI teams will monitor roads around Ladysmith, Newcastle, Kokstad, Underberg, Harding and Pietermaritzburg. Road closures may be implemented where necessary to prevent motorists from becoming stranded.

Movement of trucks to be co-ordinated

The Department of Transport will also work with the freight and logistics sector to manage the movement of trucks in order to reduce congestion on affected roads while keeping supply chains moving.

Emergency accommodation ready

In preparation for possible flooding, more than 170 rooms have been made available at the old Montclair Lodge to accommodate families who may be displaced by severe weather.

Residents in Ladysmith are urged to monitor weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed any road closure notices issued by authorities.
