Newcastle hosted its first ever Country District Tennis Tournament from Friday, July 24, to Sunday, July 26.

Scholars from Ugu District competed with scholars in Amajuba District in various age categories, playing in doubles, mixed-doubles and singles matches to showcase their prowess on the courts.

“Everyone, from the coaches to the organisers, the parents and the players thoroughly enjoyed the tournament,” said event organiser, Coetzee Hamman.

“Well done to all the players. You made us proud. Keep on playing, do your best always. We will see you all in the season,” he added.

Next year, Amajuba’s tennis players will travel to the South Coast to compete.

Amajuba takes the honours

While Amajuba District proved victorious, winning with 47 points to Ugu’s 42, event organiser, Hamman said that points are not what mattered most in the tournament.

“The main aim was to keep tennis alive and to give our children exposure to the sport. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring children together to play this beautiful sport,” he explained.

Hamman thanked all of the sponsors who helped make the event a success.
