Learner wins Umzinyathi Junior Commissioner title in district competition
Sarel Cilliers learner wins district title after delivering an impressive speech on gender-based violence and youth leadership.
Young leaders from across Umzinyathi showcased their public speaking skills and commitment to tackling gender-based violence during the District Junior Commissioner Competition held at the Dundee Detectives Lecture Hall on July 31.
The competition formed part of the district’s youth empowerment and crime prevention initiatives, encouraging learners to develop leadership skills while raising awareness about gender-based violence and femicide.
Speaking out against gender-based violence
Nine learners from schools in the Dundee, Glencoe and Nquthu policing precincts took part, representing Grades 8 to 10.
Each participant delivered a prepared speech on the topic: “What do you know about Gender-Based Violence, and how does it affect our district and the country as a whole?”
The learners demonstrated a clear understanding of the causes and consequences of gender-based violence, highlighting its impact on victims, families and communities. They also shared practical ideas on how young people can help prevent violence through education, respect and active community involvement.
Following the adjudication process, Maseeha Ebrahim of Sarel Cilliers High School was named District Junior Commissioner. Khuselwa Sithole of Thalana Secondary School was appointed Deputy District Junior Commissioner, while Kieshna Zulu was selected as District Junior Visible Policing Commander.
Siphelele Shabalala was appointed District Junior Detectives Commander and Molefe Karabo became District Junior Support Commander.
District Visible Policing Commander Colonel Nhlakanipho Mpungose congratulated all the participants, praising the competition as an important platform for developing future leaders. He encouraged the learners to remain committed to their studies, saying their confidence, leadership potential and passion for making a difference would help build stronger and safer communities.
Representatives from the Department of Education, Department of Community Safety and Liaison, Department of Social Development and the Community Policing Forum also attended the event, highlighting the importance of partnerships in promoting youth development and crime prevention.
