The Dundee SPCA has been pulled back from the brink of closure after a new committee was elected to take over the running of the organisation.

Following an urgent appeal by the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) earlier this year, and backed by the Courier, around 20 community members attended an emergency meeting in May, where volunteers stepped forward to form a new committee committed to ensuring the SPCA continues its vital work.

Newly elected chairman Willie Steenberg said the committee’s immediate priority is securing the salaries of the SPCA’s four staff members. Although the NSPCA has funded staff salaries for the past three months, the local organisation will soon need to take full responsibility for these costs.

“We are grateful for the support we have already received,” Steenberg said. “However, we still need the community’s help to ensure the SPCA remains financially sustainable.”

In addition to staff salaries, donations are needed to cover essential operating costs, including animal feed, fuel for rescue operations and general day-to-day expenses.

Committee members have already begun approaching local businesses and individuals for sponsorships and donations while planning fundraising initiatives to generate ongoing support.

The Dundee SPCA serves the Endumeni, Nquthu and Dannhauser communities, providing care for neglected, abandoned and abused animals. The organisation also promotes responsible pet ownership through awareness campaigns that discourage backyard breeding and encourage pet sterilisation.

Steenberg urged residents to visit the SPCA and consider adopting one of the many dogs and cats waiting for forever homes instead of buying pets from backyard breeders.

“We encourage families to visit the SPCA and see the work being done. Community support makes a real difference to the animals in our care,” he said.
