Newcastle West faces fresh water issues as leaks continue
Residents have raised concerns as leaks continue to damage property and disrupt water supply.
Residents of Newcastle West are once again frustrated as they grapple with water-related challenges this week, especially in the Signal Hill area.
Currently, the issues are a long-standing water leak in the play park on the corner of Erica and Drakensberg Drive, and a leak at the Milkyway Pump Station.
The Newcastle Advertiser was made aware of both leaks yesterday (August 4).
Site inspections revealed concerns over the condition and security of water infrastructure in Newcastle.
Resident fears damage to property
A resident whose property borders the park in Erica Drive is worried that the year-long water leak poses a risk to the infrastructure of his house.
The water has already started damaging his precast wall, as well as his garden.
“I am worried that the amount of water seeping through the ground will cause damage to my house itself. This needs to be sorted out as soon as possible,” he said.
He added that he has reported the issue to the municipality on numerous occasions, but nothing has been done to resolve the issue, despite municipal workers coming out to assess the damage.
Pump station leak disrupts water supply
Following this, the Newcastle Advertiser was made aware of a large water leak above the Milkyway Pump Station, resulting in water supply being cut off.
However, by late yesterday afternoon, no repairs had started, leaving residents questioning how long they’d be without running water.
Newcastle District and Residents Forum ward candidate Marlize Greyvenstein attended to both sites and has been actively trying to resolve these issues by constantly communicating with the relevant departments.
Both issues have been brought to the attention of Newcastle Municipality.
Newcastle Municipality spokesperson Musa Ngobo confirmed receipt of the inquiries, stating that ‘both inquiries have been referred to the relevant directorate for investigation and provision of the necessary technical input’.
“We are currently co-ordinating a comprehensive response to the matters raised and will endeavour to provide you with a consolidated response at the earliest possible opportunity,” Ngobo said.
