An armoured cash vehicle was attacked on the R66 near Pongola this morning (Thursday) when armed suspects ambushed it during a scheduled cash collection route.

Explosives used during attack

According to initial information, the attackers opened fire before using explosives to damage the vehicle in an apparent attempt to access the cash compartment.

It was not immediately known whether any cash was taken.

Security crew injured

Several firearms belonging to the security crew were stolen during the attack. Crew members sustained minor injuries, but no fatalities were reported.

Police investigate

The incident caused concern among motorists travelling on the route, as cash-in-transit attacks remain among the most dangerous crimes on South African roads. Such attacks often involve heavily armed suspects and explosives, placing not only security personnel but also innocent road users at risk.

Police were on the scene shortly after the attack, and no arrests had been been reported at the time of publication.
