Sandy’s Sports Bar in Glencoe swapped football boots for pool cues in a FIFA-themed tournament that also raised support for the SPCA.

Forget packed stadiums, fan parks and million-dollar television deals – this World Cup came with a pool cue in hand and a good cause on the scoreboard.

Sandy’s recently hosted a FIFA-themed doubles pool tournament, with 16 teams representing countries from around the world as they battled it out on the green baize.

Brazil, Spain, Norway, Mexico, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, England, Morocco, Colombia, Paraguay, Egypt, Argentina, Canada, France and the USA were all represented, with players proudly sporting the colours of their adopted nations.

The competition was fierce, but the cause was even more important.

Players and supporters were encouraged to support the SPCA, with donations of pet food and money collected during the event to help animals in need.

When the final balls dropped, it was the USA who lifted the tournament trophy, with Trishika and Tarish claiming the honours as winners.

While there were no penalty shoot-outs or fireworks, the USA duo had plenty of reason to celebrate.

The tournament also showed that sport can be about more than winning. Players came together for some friendly competition while helping raise much-needed support for the SPCA.

With international teams, fierce competition and plenty of national pride, Sandy’s delivered its own version of the beautiful game – with pool cues instead of footballs.

And, in this World Cup, the biggest winners may well have been the four-legged supporters.
