Women were encouraged to speak out against gender-based violence (GBV), prioritise their wellbeing and become more independent during a District CPF women’s event held in Sithembile in Glencoe.

About 60 people attended the event, which focused on GBV, women’s mental and physical wellbeing and educational support.

Breaking the silence on GBV

Umzinyathi SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana said the event provided an important platform to address challenges affecting women and to strengthen cooperation between communities and the police.

The event was attended by the District Commissioner and KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Women’s Network Champion, Major General Francis Slambert, who delivered the keynote address.

Slambert thanked the Community Policing Forum (CPF) for its partnership with SAPS, particularly in addressing crimes that disproportionately affect women.

She also encouraged women to stand on their own, speak out when they are being abused and not remain silent.

Community partners join forces

The event brought together the District Social Crime Coordinator, station social crime coordinators, the Glencoe Acting Station Commander, District Communications, the District CPF, the Department of Education and the Department of Health.

Nkwanyana said the involvement of these stakeholders highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to supporting women and addressing social challenges in communities.

The event formed part of ongoing efforts by SAPS and its community partners to raise awareness, provide support and strengthen the role of women in creating safer communities.
