Has the sun set on the R68?

Motorists raise safety concerns over worsening potholes on the R68 between Dundee and Sunset Rest, with calls for urgent repairs.

Motorists are calling for urgent repairs to the R68 between Dundee and Sunset Rest on the N11, warning that deteriorating road conditions are creating a serious hazard for road users.

One motorist, who asked not to be named, described the stretch as “full of potholes” and said the condition of the road continued to deteriorate.

“I have personally lost two tyres from a single pothole on this road,” the motorist said.

The motorist said vehicles were frequently seen stopped along the road at night after hitting potholes.

Concerns have also been raised over line painting carried out while sections of the road surface remain badly damaged.

“In places, they have even painted over the grass on the shoulder,” the motorist said.

The road’s condition was also a factor in the recent Biggarsberg Cycle Challenge, with the route changed after Cycling KZN officials deemed sections of the road too dangerous for cyclists.

The R68 is also a busy commuter route, with parents and buses using it to transport learners to and from Uelzen Primary School.

Another motorist questioned the priority given to road markings while the underlying road surface remains in poor condition.

“Money is being spent on road markings, but it does little to improve safety when the road itself is in such a poor state,” the motorist said.

The potholes are particularly hazardous at night and after rainfall, when they can be difficult to spot.

“Motorists should not have to choose between destroying a tyre and swerving into oncoming traffic,” the motorist said.
