The traffic cops are too scared

‘Statistics’ writes:-
IN the article about the crime statistics in last week’s Vryheid Herald, you point to a comparison between the Vryheid drunk driving figures and those of Mondlo.
You ask the question, is that because the traffic cops are too scared to set up a road block in Mondlo?
I will bet my bottom dollar that the traffic cops will NOT defend themselves by supplying statistics of where they did set up roadblocks, to prove that they did set up an equal, or at least an equitable number of roadblocks in Mondlo. Of course they’d be too scared to have a roadblock on a Friday or Saturday night in Mondlo.
In fact, as an ordinary citizen of Vryheid, I would go further and bet that all the 384 cases recorded to the Vryheid SAPS were people caught in Vryheid, and I would be very surprised if there were any road blocks even in Bhekuzulu.
Having said all that, I wish we could see an analysis of the figure of 384. Where did they happen, on what day of the week, at what time of the month, at what time of the day or night? Were the drivers male or female? What age were the drivers? Were they carrying passengers, how many were taxi and bus drivers? Yes, even were they black, white, coloured, Indian or Chinese? And how drunk were they?
Only by an analysis of these figures can the authorities know who they should target in their anti-drunken driving awareness campaign. The figures in the Vryheid Herald show a progressive increase in the number of cases over the last 10 years. If we don’t want the number to rise even further, we need to know who to stop doing it in the future.
