Madam – Heritage Day has come and gone, but in modern day society, how does one truly celebrate their heritage?
Through the years, different cultures have mingled with each other to such an extent that no one can say they belong to one specific culture.
For example, the Afrikaans nation comes from the Dutch and Germans, whereas the English community have roots in the Irish, Scottish and English culture. These two communities have interbred to such an extent that they neither really British nor are they are German or Dutch.
The same can go for Africans who have Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho backgrounds.
We can also not forget those who hail from interracial relationships.
In order for us as South Africans to truly celebrate Heritage Day, we as a country have to embrace every cultural aspect of our country.
As the “rainbow nation”, we can honestly say we hail from a colourful nation and we have the blood of so many other races running through our veins that we can’t be anything but proud of who we are.
