I recently did research on road deaths on the stretch of road from the set of robots at the Forderville/Colita intersection leading down to the Little Bushman’s River coming towards Harding Street.

I found that there were 26 fatalities on that little stretch of road in the past 52 years.

Two years ago I wrote to the Municipal Manager asking for rumble strips, slow down signs, etc to be erected on that stretch to caution motorists to slow down but it all seems to have gone to deaf ears.

My biggest fear is what is going to happen if an 18 wheeler is coming down that hill into town and it loses its brakes or goes out of control, which is so common these days.

We see hundreds of school children from Drakensberg Secondary and Estcourt Primary walking to and from school on that stretch.

I am sure placing signs and speed humps will slow down vehicles and allow them to pass safely.

The same applies to the stretch going down Lorne Street leading to Alice Bridge.

I think we should take a lesson from the Field’s Hill, Pinetown accident, which took place on September 5.

Why do things after a disaster occurs?

Let’s get off our butts and act now.

After all, these children and the public need to be protected.

In my letter to the Municipal Manager I also made mention of the trees that need to be cut from time to time on the same stretch, but I do not see any tree felling.

This can be very dangerous during storms when these huge trunks fall onto vehicles and can cause major chaos and even deaths.
