Editor – We are disgusted local fishermen and we are up-in-arms at the state of our favourite fishing spots along the Klip River. We really do not know whether the fishermen in Ladysmith are just poor fishermen or just plain heavy drinkers, because all our favourite spots are littered with trash and empty beer bottles.
No real fisherman would leave the site he fished at weekly or even monthly in such a state.
When we get to one of our regular fishing haunts, we are forced to spend the better part of an hour clearing up the area before we can even start fishing.
Hopefully we are not alone in our quest to have a clean and safe riverbank for all of Ladysmith’s fishermen!
To reiterate, it is our firm belief that no real fisherman would leave a site in such a state.
When we are done fishing for the day, we leave the place spotless so that the next angler to use the spot does not have to clean up.
Fishing is the biggest sport in South Africa and probably the largest growing sport in the world!
South Africa has over 145 common inland or freshwater fish species, and attracts people from all cultures. Some people fish to eat, while others fish simply for the joy of the catch, with most fish released afterwards.
