I was appalled to read about the child that almost died as a result of negligence (Estcourt News, October 25, page 1.)
However, it does not surprise me.
There are many of these hazards around our town.
It also doesn’t surprise me that Uthukela District Municipality only acted after the incident.
Their response time is one of the slowest rendered by a government department.
So many times we hear people saying that they reported the problem long before.
It is very unfortunate that an innocent child had to be traumatised in such a terrible and undignified manner.
How long will the authorities continue to feed their power at the expense of the people?
They aren’t the ones who have to endure the burst sewer pipes and leaking water pipes.
I hope that this is an isolated incident and that other open manholes are covered as soon as possible.
Let’s not wait for someone to die.
