Why are promises not kept?

Madam – The news “Ayliff Street businesses take a knock” comes as no surprise.

Promises were made by the mayor and officials that the construction work would be speeded up and the contract period has come and gone a long time ago which has become the norm and it seems that everyone accepts this, no matter what the excuse.

The problems experienced by the contractor should have been foreseen and there should have been proper planning.

I understand the frustrations and financial loss of the businesses that these unnecessary delays have caused, but at the same time why are the business chambers silent on matters that affect businesses such as those in Ayliff Street?

Business people need to stand together and fight against poor service delivery. After all, we all need businesses in this town to survive.

Response from Mayor:

I did not make promises that the road will be complete. I promised that the contractor will be put on terms to complete the road on time. Should he not do it within the time limit, we will penalise him/her.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and need to come up with more innovative ideas to upgrade infrastructure whilst not hampering business. Unfortunately the community is not used to seeing development in the CBD as previous councils ignored this critical area. Beauty comes with pain…
