Sir,
The year 2013 has been a solid ratepayers’ nightmare, as we watched our rates and taxes disappearing down a seemingly endless hole, with precious little coming back in favour of the ratepayer.
The redoing of Karellandman Street is another debacle that simply does not seem to come to an end. Ratepayers of Dundee waited for many weeks to get a working traffic light at the Union/Karellandman intersection, and now very few of these new lights seem to work, again.
That laughable street painting job that was done in Karellandman Street was not the municipality’s fault, but it compounded, and is still compounding traffic issues in that road.
Dundee has been, for the best part of the year, a town floundering without any local leadership, as this town council stumbled from one crisis to another.
Highly dubious actions were seen, such as the removal of the Section 56 managers without any due process, and the return of the municipal manager.
Maybe the ongoing paralysis that is currently affecting this municipality will be addressed by the ongoing forensic probe, but we are not holding our breaths as many leading lights from the province have been here to address this dysfunctional municipality, with quite simply nothing coming of any of it.
What bout all the fuss about his disciplinary proceedings, where a legal practitioner was accosted in the building, and all the hurly-burly created by people within the Ratepayers’ Association and the DA, and then very quietly one day, he just walks back into his very well-paid job…?
We are very happy to see old Sipho back in town, doing his job like the good traffic officer he is. Why do we not have more traffic law enforcers in town?
Where are the other traffic cops?
And, if it is a question of under-staffing, why is something not being done about this?
Traffic offences are being committed on a daily basis as the majority of people have no idea what to do at traffic circles, and people also seem to think that vehicle hazard lights are there for them to stop wherever the fancy takes them.
The town is also, quite simply, drowning in litter, because people are littering and dumping with impunity.
We are looking at new by-laws that will combat this scourge, but the municipality will have to explain to us how they are planning to police this.
We would really like to know.
