Road safety works two ways

Road user writes:- THE front page story in the Vryheid Herald [Vryheid Herald, November 15] makes the point that the bypass intersection is an accident waiting to happen. I agree. That intersection is dangerous, partly because the traffic signs are inadequate but also because we have to accept that people nowadays drive like idiots. But although that intersection has been highlighted because it has been in the past the scene of accidents, the fact is that the roads generally do not lend themselves to road safety. You have to swerve for huge pothole in town and out of town, and out of town it seems that more and more often you see cows and goats grazing the road sides. I say that if the authorities expect my car to be road-worthy and penalise me if it isn’t, then they are duty bound to provide me with vehicle-worthy roads upon which to drive. In the case of the front page of the Vryheid Herald, they are duty-bound to make sure that the chances of an accident happening there are minimal. Otherwise it makes a farce of any road safety campaign.
