Madam – Sirens and flashing lights.

There can be no doubt that ambulances, fire trucks and police cars must be given the right of way in emergencies. Lives could depend on this. There must be some doubt, however, whether those sirens really need to be used in a continuous manner on a quiet and deserted road, and them, even worse, sometimes in the middle of the night.

However, in mitigation, we must remember that little boys enjoy a rattle or similar noise-making toy and that this joy and fascination continues unabated even when the boy has grown into a man, and even if he has become a senior person or a bearer of public office.

This is only human, after all. The real and practical value of all this siren sounding may be debatable but one thing is for certain; the thrill of it does wonders for the sounder’s ego.
