Madam – Children these days have no respect for either authority or the elderly.

Last week, I witnessed a child having a temper tantrum outside the toy section in a local supermarket because his mother said she did not have enough money to buy him a toy he wanted.

I was horrified! The poor woman was so embarrassed she was almost in tears herself. The tantrum was so bad I almost offered to buy the child the toy myself if only to spare the mother the heartache.

But then I thought, what kind of children are that spoiled in the first place to have a tantrum when they don’t immediately get what they want? Is that the fault of the parent for always giving in to the demands of the child?

My own children, who I would like to say are not spoiled, sometimes try to pull that card with me when I take them shopping, but I always find that a firm word usually sort the matter out.

As parents we always try to the best for our children, and it’s sad to know that most families cannot afford luxuries some children want these days.

Surely we should be teaching our children the most important are not material things, but rather love, kindness and compassion.
