Editor – I saw some photos taken by friends who attended the Estcourt Relay for Life event that took place over the past weekend. And I have to say… once again, the overall majority of people who decided to support this event were Indian.
It feels to me like the other races think they are immune to cancer.
When Cansa holds functions in Ladysmith to try and get people involved, it’s always the same people who show up, and again, mostly the Indian community.
Come on, we need to stand together against a disease that doesn’t care whether you live in a fancy neighbourhood or a shack, whether you think you are educated and well-to-do, or whether you know you are just an ordinary chap.
It’s as if other races have their heads in the sand.
Yes, we don’t want to think about something like that, but we have to!
When I had a family member diagnosed, the Cancer Association were so good to us. They came to see us and talk to us about what we could expect in the future. They didn’t know us from a bar of soap, but they sat in our lounge and sacrificed their time to talk to us. They offered our family member accommodation in a care home in Maritzburg while undergoing treatment, saving us thousands (which we didn’t have anyway). Not forgetting the phone calls and the well wishes.
Cansa is not a money-making scheme with no heartbeat, they are real people caring for patients and families with real hurt in their lives. I have decided I will go out of my way to support them. Even if we don’t want to face the possibility, let’s all realise that their next patient could be any one of us.
