OUR CHURCH placed an order with a very popular local furniture dealer in town. The cheque was made out for the full amount being a cash sale, and signed by all the signatories of which I am one.
After the cheque was collected I was notified that I had to go and sign the cheque once again in the presence of a cashier. For the cheque to be collected and me to arrive at the shop plus a weekend in between took six days.
On arrival I was told that the cheque was stale, at which I mentioned that to my knowledge cheques are valid for three months. I then had to produce my ID book which was photo-copied and sign the back of the cheque giving my contact number as well.
Then Absa bank was phoned to clear a Standard bank cheque!!
Needless to say the cheque was not approved, the reason being the cheque was stale.
I really lost it then and told them to return the cheque and I would take my business elsewhere. I have never heard of one bank clearing a different bank’s cheque or of a cheque being stale after six days.
Then one wonders how all the people who buy on credit and do not pay their accounts get away with it if it is so difficult to pay cash for goods!
