Madam – A special message for the community from the Newcastle SPCA
Fireworks are enjoyed year-round by some people but can be a source of fear for many animals. Cats and dogs are able to hear a wider range and softer sounds than humans thus causing your pets to become terrified of loud noise.
You can alleviate your pets’ fear and distress during the coming Firework and Festive season by following these handy tips:
– If your pets react badly to fireworks or loud noises, seek professional help from your veterinarian.
– Ensure your pets have identification in case they do escape.
– Keep your dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off.
– Try to stay at home with your pets so they are not alone and afraid.
– Keep the radio or television turned on to help minimise the impact of noises outside.
– If your pets shows signs of fear try to ignore their behaviour. Leave them alone to find their own safe place to hide; this could be under the bed, behind the sofa or in their bed. Only intervene if they are likely to harm themselves.
– Keep your dog or cat distracted by putting familiar and comforting things around them such as toys or baskets. You could provide them with something to do such as giving your dog a chewy bone or lots of catnip or a catnip toy for felines.
– If your pets live outside ensure their cages, pens and aviaries are partly covered with blankets so they have a sound-proofed area and the sight of the fireworks can be blocked out, or move them indoors into a shed or garage.
– Give your pets lots of extra bedding so they have something to burrow in and feel safe. Try hiding some treats in their bedding to keep them occupied.
– Don’t forget small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, birds or hamsters.
Be a compassionate and responsible person!
KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE!
