Madam – Over the past few months, we as a community have faced excruciating heat with no sign of rain.
Then, out of nowhere, the heavens opened up on Tuesday and rain poured onto the parched lands of Newcastle.
However, despite the interlude in the drought that is ravaging our land, we need to remember the damage caused by the drought is still upon us.
The dams are far from full and now is the time to save water.
I have witnessed how people use hosepipes to wash their cars, sprinkler systems to wet their gardens and showing an absolute disregard to the harsh conditions we are now living in.
Lets avoid washing our cars with hosepipes and wetting our gardens. I know that everyone wants a pretty garden and a clean car, but does a colourful garden and shiny car benefit society as a whole? Is it more important to drive a clean car or having your children being able to quench their thirst?
I am sure there are people who will simply roll their eyes, thinking they will merely get bottled water from the nearest store, but what happens when the whole land runs dry?
Let us think about the future and avoid wasting water, whether through leaving taps running or turning a blind eye when seeing a burst pipe in the street.
