On Thursday evening, November 5, I was terrified by the news of a 12-year-old who was stabbed to death by two school mates.
As I was watching the news, I was confronted by the fact that, as a community, we have a role to play in order to contribute to build a better future for our children, by initiating programmes that will help them to believe that the future is dependent on the way our children are brought up.
As a parent and Life Coach, I normally get to meet with parents and the children who are arguing.
I find it difficult to solve the matter when the parent/s have nothing to offer towards the growth of his or her child. Sometimes there is not even a plan to say, for my child to be protected I do ABC or D.
Society should build from the FAMILY environment.
The question is how many of us as parents believe that we have a role to play, or a contribution to make, in order to change the way our children think or live their lives?
Let me take for instance the movies that we watch with our children – the fact that its says Parental Guidance means we must use our own discretion, whether we keep on watching the movie or change the channel.
It is my plea that we go back to the drawing board and see where we went wrong in allowing our children to watch violent movies/programmes in our homes or at a friend’s home.
We are approaching the 16 days of activism against women and child abuse.
The festive season has started – what plan do we have to reduce statistics of abuse and violence?
Are we instilling the values, which will help the young ones to know UBUNTU?
Let us stand together as communities to instill social cohesion into the children as well as practising it in our homes as well as in our working environment.
Stand firm as parents to teach our children and remind them that the future is in their hands.
Let’s be able to create an environment where we can talk about such issues to help one another.
It can be in churches, social clubs, gatherings, schools, homes… lets make a mark while we can in order to reduce the statistics.
If you are a parent, I would love to hear what your point of view is.
