Editor – Is there anyone who is not disturbed by the weak rand that seems to be constantly losing ground to the dollar and the pound? I am not a financial whiz, so I am bewildered at how some currencies are strong and others just bottom out and lose their value. Money is a man-made mode of bartering, is it not?
So why can’t currencies be controlled when it comes to their strength and value? This may sound silly to someone in the know with a B.Com degree, etc, but think about it nonetheless.
We really don’t want to go the way of Zimbabwe, with that kind of ridiculous inflation destroying the economy. I guess Jacob Zuma’s comments don’t help confidence abroad (“Africa is the largest continent” being just the tip of the iceberg).
It’s kind of reassuring to have Pravin Gordhan back at the helm when it comes to the Reserve Bank, but can he stem the tide that seems to be taking the once rock-solid rand out to sea to drown?
Anyway, I’m just voicing my concerns as a Joe Nobody in the street with no real economic savvy. All I know is that I work hard for my dough and it’s soul-crushing to think that soon it won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on. Anyone have any thoughts to share on the matter?
