Dogs are to be cared for and not to stray

There are so many ways to ensure your dogs stay in your premises, but yet people show a total lack of care and dogs can be seen wandering in almost every street in Newcastle.

Madam –

I was mortified after reading last week’s Newcastle Advertiser, and seeing how a dog was killed by two others.

I would have been inconsolable if it had been one of my dogs.

What gets me is how people allow their animals to roam the streets unattended.

There are so many ways to ensure your dogs stay in your premises, but yet people show a total lack of care and dogs can be seen wandering in almost every street in Newcastle.

I honestly think people in this town get animals for all the wrong reasons, because if you truly loved your dog, you would do anything in your power to keep your dog safe.

Personally, I spent months teaching my dogs not to leave my premises.

It was rather simple. I just give my dogs continuous attention, had them sterilised, keep the gates closed and disciplined them when they did leave the yard.

The reason I think it is important to keep dogs contained is not only because I care deeply for them, but imagine if your dog was responsible for biting or killing another dog, or heaven forbid, killing a child.

Could you as a dog owner live with the knowledge that your pet destroyed another family’s life, or do you just not care?

Keep your animals in your yard.
