It would be nice if councillors represented us, not a party

It should be a mutual pride in one’s area or ward for both those who live in it and those who are in charge

Editor – It would be nice if we as a town embraced (or should I say adopted) local councillors for all the areas in town.

I am not talking about the fake wards the IEC made the town adopt because of number of voters per ward, but realistic areas…
Even if some councillors lost part of their wards and got given areas in others wards.

It would not matter; let’s call them election-only areas. But if every councillor had a manageable ward that made realistic sense, things would improve.

I would not care if the councillor was ANC, IFP or DA, as long as I knew he was responsible for “our” area. And I do not use “our” lightly, as it should be a mutual pride in one’s area or ward for both those who live in it and those who are in charge.

I watched how the roads in some areas were tarred before Christmas and I saw a particular councillor stopping and chatting to workers. It is clear he was ensuring they delivered and before you ask, he was a ruling party councillor, but he was doing something to improve the area his constituents stayed in.

But how does a councillor help out over an areas that stretches from Van Reenen to Hospital Park? The area is just too big.
