Madam – The love of reading is so important to instil in children from an early age.
I was so happy to hear the Newcastle Library will be getting much-needed attention with regards to the extension that is currently taking place. I recall many, many happy hours between the aisles of that library when I was younger.
Sadly, I no longer go to the library because there is never enough parking during the day or even on weekends, but my children and grandchildren still find the time to go, and they always come back so excited about new reading ‘treasures’ they find!
I want to encourage all parents out there to make reading something your children will enjoy, rather than making it seem like a chore.
I know so many people who say their favourite books are the ones they read in school, the set books, because they read nothing else but magazines since their school days. I find this so incredibly sad because they will never know the joy and adventures that await them between the pages of good books.
I really hope the younger generation will learn to return to books for escape, comfort, knowledge and pleasure. There is not much more rewarding than falling into a great story, whether it be adventure, crime, romance or even autobiographies.
They all have their place in the world, and the world is brighter for it.
Happy gran CSK
