Madam – Is racism alive and well in Newcastle?
Last week was anti racism week and I have been reading your stories online and in the paper with interest. Despite all the awareness and education that takes place around the country, there are still those who feel nothing about judging the lives of others and this is shocking to me.
In particular, I liked the segment about mixed race relationships. If you know your country’s history, you know about the dangers of the type of thinking that advocates that certain groups should not mix with others.
I heard what some of my fellow residents had to say about mixed relationships and it stunned me that in this day and age, especially in the younger generation, people are still so ignorant to believe they can justify saying that races should only marry and stay with their own.
I know plenty of interracial couples, and guess what? They face the exact same challenges as couples of the same skin tone. They fight, they laugh, they cry, they love. They both bleed red. Who the heck are you to judge them?
All you do is perpetuate hate. Why do you care if their cultures clash? Since when is that any of your business? Are you the one who will be supporting them financially? Will you be raising their children. No. All you are doing is contributing to the hate.
These couples are already being judged for being different. They are judged by people like you, because their different skin tones offends you. Grow up and get over yourself! They will go through more in their lifetime, precisely because of people like you, who are too stubborn and stupid to live and let live.
The sad part is that the ones who suffer in this will be your children, because once you teach them to treat people differently based on the colours of their skin, the damage is done and this country will never heal.
