Witness recounts scary incident in Kirkland Street

Are we drifting into a society that does not respect law and order? I honestly believe the moral fibre of our society is deteriorating rapidly into lawlessness.

Madam – I witnessed a scary incident in Kirkland Street on Wednesday, May 17 , and this can be summed up by one word – anarchy.

A car driven by a woman avoided a pedestrian who walked into the path of the car. This pedestrian had a little baby in her arms and another toddler who hung onto her side. She attempted to cross a busy street at peak traffic where there was no pedestrian crossing.

The driver of the car stopped in time to avoid an accident. During this time, onlookers appeared from nowhere and unleashed a brutal and barbaric barrage of insults, threats and blame on the driver. An informal trader in a wheelchair started banging violently on the driver’s window.

Luckily some family members of the driver, who witnessed this unbecoming behaviour, had put their foot down to defuse this situation. The onlookers continued hurling insults and blame on the driver. Was this cruel outburst necessary? The answer is a simple NO.

Are we drifting into a society that does not respect law and order? I honestly believe the moral fibre of our society is deteriorating rapidly into lawlessness.
