LETTER: We must start noticing people again

Schoolchildren are left to fend for themselves trying to pass the road, while taxi’s just drive up and down to pick up more passengers.

Madam – Driving through Newcastle the past couple of weeks it became clear to me that the New Year has kicked off in full swing.

Traffic is backed up; people are excitedly (and sometimes anxiously) driving around to get to their destinations quicker and schoolchildren have popped up everywhere.

And in between the hustle and bustle of everything I notice how no one notices each other.

Schoolchildren are left to fend for themselves trying to pass the road, while taxi’s just drive up and down to pick up more passengers.

Parents frantically run around and drive like hooligans to arrive at work on time, and in the shopping centers people run from one shop to the other without greeting or smiling and without noticing the skinny, callused hand hopelessly shaking a polystyrene cup for a cent or two.

Let us start noticing again. Notice more of the beauty around you, let’s notice each other again.
