LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Surround yourself with positivity
We are forced into economic situations which are beyond our control, and faced with a government that does not seem to care about the 'little people', as long as their own interests are being served and their own families are taken care of.

Madam – In life, it is very easy to be negative all the time.
We are forced into economic situations which are beyond our control, and faced with a government that does not seem to care about the ‘little people’, as long as their own interests are being served and their own families are taken care of.
The average family struggles to make it through the month, paying for rates, food, rent and schooling. One just one salary, this daily struggle is made worse all the time with the way prices are increasing. The saddest part is that most businesses cannot afford to adjust salaries every time the price of goods and fuel in this country goes up.
It is truly a vicious circle that is seemingly unending.
What makes all this worse, on top of the daily struggle to put enough food on the table, is the amount of negative energy that is being expelled into the air, which infects all communities in this country. For every good deed that is done, you will always get a few people who sneer and whine and complain.
Rather than working to make a positive contribution to their communities, these people seem to thrive on highlighting the negative, and stressing out people who are already at their breaking point.
These selfish souls go on self-righteous tirades about everything from the weather to service delivery to campaigns to help the poor. And while most of their points seem valid at the moment, we never stop to think about the effect their negative energy has on our own minds and souls at the end of the day.
This year, I promised myself that I would try my best to remain as optimistic as I could, despite the daily struggles, and especially in the face of these energy wasters.
I can tell you for sure, that almost two months into the year, I am almost worn down by the daily vitriol I am exposed to on a regular basis. If adults can be this cynical, what hope are we leaving for our children?
Are the future generation doomed to be one of pessimistic talkers? What footsteps are we leaving behind for the younger generation to follow? Why do we have to kill their hope so early?
I want to encourage people to think before they say and do. All it takes is one negative sentence to drain the hope out of someone who wants to remain positive. Surround yourself with people and thoughts that make you feel good about yourself and your future, and close the door firmly in the face of negative energy.
