Leroy Gericke lived by principles of honesty and integrity, who stood up for fairness, transparency and accountability in public office

It is hard to eulogise any man – to capture in words not just the facts and dates that make a life, but the essential truth of a person, there are private joys and sorrows, the quiet moments and unique qualities that illuminate someone’s soul.

Councillor Leroy Gericke was a longstanding member of the Democratic Alliance and a long-serving councillor on our local municipal council, who served with distinction. Leroy Gericke lived by principles of honesty and integrity, who stood up for fairness, transparency and accountability in public office, and for equality of opportunities and access to public service for all without fear or favour.

In council, he was a voice of reason, along with incisive intellect; he was a fine man and an excellent councillor.

The great Nelson Mandela once quoted: “It matters not how straight the gate, or how charged with punishments the scroll, l am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”

What a magnificent soul Leroy Gericke was, we will miss him deeply. May God bless the memory of this fine and excellent soul.
