LETTER: Pensioner is ecstatic to have outstanding service from local store

As a 75 year old pensioner, I always look for good deals.

Madam – Every so often, one experiences deeds and services of an outstanding nature.

As a 75 year old pensioner, I always look for good deals.

Twice over the last month there was an advert by Checkers for fish at a very reasonable price. I went to town to avail myself of what I considered a good bargain, only to be politely informed that stocks had not come in.

The manageress at Checkers, Amajuba Mall, took my details and said she would keep me informed.

True to her word, she later phoned me and told me that unfortunately this specific offer referred only to Checkers stores that had fresh fish departments, and as the Newcastle stores only catered for frozen fish, they would not receive the fish in question.

She followed this by again phoning me to say that she had reported the issue to the area manager in Pietermaritzburg.

To my great surprise (and delight), she again called me to say that her boss was coming to Newcastle shortly, and to counter my obvious disappointment, he would be bringing the fresh fish I wanted, on ice in a cool bag.

Then I received a call from the area manager, who told me that he was on his way with the fish and would contact me on arrival. This he did, but then, to my pleasant surprise, informed me that he would arrange for the fish to be delivered to my house!

This happened on the same day, and the young man who brought the fish even helped me put it in my freezer.

My huge thanks goes to the manageress at Checkers, Amajuba Mall, the manager from Pietermaritzburg and all the staff involved. If this is not service above and beyond the call of duty, then I don’t know what is. They made this senior citizen very, very happy.

Yours in gratitude – Bim Philpott
