LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thank you for saving my life!

It came as a great surprise to me to be told that I had went into cardiac arrest.

Madam – In the early hours of Saturday, January 27, I experienced severe chest pains.

The ambulance was contacted. Upon their arrival, I was stabilised and taken to Newcastle Mediclinic for further medical treatment. It came as a great surprise to me to be told that I had went into cardiac arrest.

By Sunday, January 28, I had been transferred to Pietermaritzburg Mediclinic’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Ironically, the same paramedics who transported me to Newcastle Mediclinic were the same paramedics who transported me to PMB.

There, I underwent a procedure whereby a stent was inserted into my heart, as I had a blocked artery. Since then my life has changed drastically. I am so fortunate to be alive today, and I would like to thank the Almighty Lord, Jesus Christ.

I would also like to thank the doctors and staff at Mediclinic Newcastle as well as Cardiologist, Dr K. Shein and staff at Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for taking such good care of me. I would also like to take the opportunity to give a special thanks to paramedics, Warren and Johan of ER24.

Paramedics often go unrecognised, but I believe their actions, passion and dedication for their job truly saved my life.
