Editor – Ladysmith is extremely privileged when it comes to the upgrading of telecommunications infrastructure in town.
Three years ago, we had contractors “changing the scene” (laying fibreglass cables) on the pavements from Ruby Gailey Drive down to Murchison Street and past the Royal Hotel.
Then, in the past two months, we had another contractor repeating the process.
But to reopen the same trench two weeks later just seemed hilarious. It is with great disappointment that I noticed the reopening of a well rounded off set of trenches around Ladysmith High School and in Berea Road.
First I thought it to be short-term memory loss of the role players, then forgotten cables or connections crossed my mind. On enquiring, I discovered this was due to one of the contractors laying their pipes and cables. It was apparently instructed from their head offices not to wait a day or co-operate in any way with each other.
The noticeable regulatory absence of the owner of the pavements in this matter, our local Alfred Duma Municipality, is not surprising, as mayoral vehicles are more important.
An implemented policy like laying double guiding plastic pipes for the future contractors seemed to be too far away and absent in the minds of our local municipality.
I presume that the Town Planning Department and head of this department granted permission for these excavations and piping.
I trust that our local councillors will, at the next council meeting, discuss this madness and report back to us via your medium.
