GALLERY: Vryheid Cricket Club – Who can stop Mr X?

For the second time on Sunday a spinner impressed. Matthew Stride claimed 7 scalps for 25 runs in his 7 overs.

THE Gladiators traveled to Dumbe last Sunday for one of the two Kennedy Cup matches that were played.

Dumbe won the toss and batted first in this well spirited game. They amassed 270/5 in their allotted 40 overs with Leon Solms scoring a run a ball 93 and Loubser Theron chipping in with a good 58. For the Gladiators, Thulani Zondo (8-0-39-2) and Sphah Nkosi (8-0-56-1) were the best amongst the wicket takers.

In batting, the Gladiators came up against a fine spell of spin bowling from young Zane Holliday and were skittled out for 129. Zane ended with impressive bowling figures of 7-3-11-6. Alwyn Carstens also bowled well and returned with figures of 5-0-29-3. Freddy Stoltenkamp (33) and Andrew Vorster (27) were the top run scorers for the Gladiators. Dumbe won the match by 141 runs.

At Cecil Emmett, Wicket Wasps batted first against Mr X and were bowled out for 203 in the 31st over. Tiaan Naude’ (76) and Juan Booyens (53) batted well for the Wicket Wasps. For the second time on Sunday a spinner impressed. Matthew Stride claimed 7 scalps for 25 runs in his 7 overs. Mr X paced the run chase well and reached the target in the 34th over for the loss of 6 wickets. Freedom Buthelezi (40 not out) and Duvan Grobelaar (32) were the main contributors with the bat. Best bowling figures for Wicket Wasps were Tiaan Naudè (8-1-30-3) and Andrew Brooks (6-0-28-1). Mr X won the match by 4 wickets.

This coming Sunday Wicket Wasps travel to Dumbe and Gladiators play Mr X at Cecil Emmett starting at 10:30am.
