AFTER a season of daily training and galas at least once a month, the swimmers who qualified had the opportunity to compete in a gala at Durban’s Kings Park Stadium.
The gala took place from April 1 to April 3. Vryheid Swimming Club has 35 members and only nine swimmers could qualify in the times that SA Swimming set. Level 1 had over 300 swimmer entries and at the Level 2 gala there were 200 swimmers. The provinces that competed were the Northern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu Natal.
Vryheid Swimming Club entered five Level 1 swimmers: Zoe Richards, Pierre Grobler, Nadine van Wyk, Dirk Grobler and Kirsten Verschuuren, and one Level 2 swimmer: Berne Van Heerden.
The standards were high but our swimmers were very competitive. Zoe Richards and Pierre Grobler both swam personal best times and the club is looking forward to seeing these two young swimmers excel.
Nadine van Wyk was ninth in 50m Butterfly and fifth in 50m Backstroke and Dirk Grobler was third in 50m Backstroke and seventh in 100m Backstroke. Kirston Verschuuren was seventh in 100m Freestyle, seventh in 50m Freestyle, eighth in 50m Butterfly, seventh in 100m Breaststroke and seventh in 50m Breaststroke. Berne Van Heerden was fourth in 50m Backstroke. Well done to all these swimmers and enjoy the break until September 2016, you deserve it.
